11-18-2004 - Dorothy Ayers Hetzel
Dorothy Ayers Hetzel, 77, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004.

She was born April 14, 1927 in Bluefield, and was a daughter of the late Silas and Nell Hetzel. After working at The Commercial Bank for 12 years, she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Languages from Concord College and later acquired her Master's Degree in the same field from the University of Tennessee. Additional graduate work was completed at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master's Degree in Education from Radford University.

She taught French at Bluefield High School for over 25 years and took pleasure in traveling. She led many tour groups through Europe. Of the cities visited, she was especially fond of Paris. In her spare time, she assisted residents at GlenWood Park Nursing Home. Following her retirement in 1993, she enjoyed working in her flower garden, sewing, and reading. She was formerly a member and organist at the Edgemont Baptist Church and more recently joined Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, John Frederick Hetzel; her son, Adrian H. Hetzel and his wife, Rhonda of Spartanburg, S.C.; three grandchildren, Lauren, Kristen, and Kaitlin Hetzel; her daughter, Dr. Amanda I. Starnes and her husband, Larry of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Imogene Via and her husband, E.K. of Mullens and Norma Hayes and her husband, Jack of Yorktown, Va.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 19, 2004 from 7-9 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at Monte Vista Park Cemetery, with the Rector, David McNeer officiating.
