Bluefield High School Class of 1971 - Latest News

As we make plans for the 2009 Get Together on July 11^th and 12^th, we are faced with a couple of decisions. Over the past 6 years we have been able to keep the cost low due to the number of people who attend the Get Together and by taking advantage of discounts available from the Holiday Inn. Because of the discounts on the banquet room and buffet dinner we have always been able to keep the cost of the Get Together about $25 for the dinner and $10 for the Breakfast on Sunday morning.

There has always been a minimum number of people that we have had to pay for regardless of how many people attended. Except for last year, we have always met the minimum. Since we started having the Get Togethers six years ago, on average we have not lost any money.  Because of the low turnout last year we want to make sure the interest is still there to continue having the annual Get Togethers. Hopefully last year’s low turnout was just bad timing with those who wanted to attend but were unable.

We made the decision several years ago to have the Get Together at the Bluefield Holiday Inn for a couple of reasons. First was to have the availability of lodging for out of town guests and to have an “All under one Roof” event.  It gave us a place to meet, eat and sleep. A lot of people have taken advantage of staying at the Holiday Inn over the past several years.

Here are our three options available for the 2009 Get Together.

OPTION 1:  Our discounts with the Holiday Inn are no longer available. The price of the 2009 Get Together is going to be $35. Along with the increase in the price for the food and banquet room we will need to have at least 30 people to attend. If we decide to have the Get Together at the Holiday Inn we need a commitment from those who want to attend by June 5^th. If we cannot get a commitment for 30 people (classmates and guests) by June 5^th we will cancel the Get Together at the Holiday Inn.

OPTION 2. If we have less than 30 people who want to attend the Get Together at the Holiday Inn or you would rather go somewhere different, we have the option of going to either Ryan’s Steakhouse or Mayflower Seafood Restaurant, both located in Bluefield, VA. If we have the Get Together Dinner at one of these restaurants, you can control cost by what you order off of the menu.

OPTION 3: If the interest in this year’s Get Together is still low we will cancel the 2009 Get Together and make plans to have a tail gate party this fall for our class at the Beaver-Graham football game.
