Just looked at the 50th class reunion pictures. Sorry to have missed the fun times with everyone. My husband Randy Snider has Alzheimer’s and wasn’t doing very well during the time of the reunion. Please keep us in your prayers . I know each of you guys were glad to have been a part of the 50th. Hopefully the next gathering will be a time for us. God Bless each of you . Stay safe .

Well....we just had our 50th Class Reunion this past weekend. We had such a wonderful time. It was great seeing old friends and renewing friendships from long ago. We ate, We drank, We laughed and We hugged.... We also stopped and remembered classmates and teachers who have gone on before us. I treasure these times we gather together.  If you weren't with us....you were missed and thought of. Everyone take care and God Bless You. Pam

Class of ’71 Poem
By Kay Flannery

Twelve years of schooling have gone past,
Some say they have gone by fast
While others say they have passed so slow.
Yet whatever we do or wherever we go
We will always remember our three years spent here
As filled with pride and joy and cheer.
Remember three years ago when we were sophomores so low.
On the first day of school, we heard Mr. Arrington say:
“Welcome back to school today.”
We made ourselves known at the first of the year
When we misspelled the SOPHOMORE cheer.
Eventually as Beavers we took our place
And began to face
Our responsibilities as members of BHS.
Yet we were called “Silly Sophomores,” none the less.
We started to join organizations and clubs
And we tried so hard not to flub
On menial tasks we were asked to do
Such as carrying trays and shinning our shoes.
As our sophomore year came to a close,
The National Honor Society choose
A boy and girl, honored so high
As “Outstanding Sophomores” of Bluefield High.
Laurie and Tommy were picked above all
Because these students had the most on the ball.
In a year, we were Juniors, so great,
And it was once again our fate
To hear our principle, Mr. Arrington, say,
“Welcome back to school today.”
As Juniors we had more of a chance
To let our studies and activities advance.
Though we worked harder than ever before
We never let school become a bore.
We were juniors full of vitality,
Eagerness, strength, and morality.
We tried so hard to be the best,
That we hardly ever had time to rest.
One of the highlights of junior year
Was the electing of our leaders to cheer.
Carolyn, Karen, Sharon, Kathy, and Kimmy
Were seniors chosen to do the shouting and grinning.
Various gifts, gadgets and trinkets were rendered
By the Student Body Presidential contenders.
They were Kathy, Stanley, Fermnell and Joe,
And the people elected, as everyone knows,
Were Kathy, President, and Stanley, Vice,
And all won memories so very nice.
Seniors we were in less than a year,
And we had the chance to once again hear
Our great principal, Mr. Arrington, say:
“Welcome back to school today.”
Immediately as seniors, we took the lead,
And for the school did many a deed.
In leadership we ranked number one,
Creating harmony, joy, and fun.
Our class officers who were all so merry
Were Stanley, Carolyn, Tommy and Jerry.
Of two Beaver queens, seniors could boast,
The Bluefield High Homecoming Queen, Chris Yost,
And the girl picked most outstandingly so,
West Virginia’s Jr. Miss, our own Kathy Jo.
In sports, Beavers were on top again,
With an honor, a senior did win.
Jerry Pruett won this award so great,
Which was the lineman of the State.
Trophies were awarded to students of speech,
And the goal of State Champs was finally reached
By the speakers Laurie and Lisa and Joe,
For this to Nationals, they will go.
Yes, we shared the good times as well as bad
And dressed and talked according to fad.
To our teachers we would like to say,
“Thank-you for helping us in every way.”
But tonight, our senior year comes to an end,
And now for ourselves, we must fend.
Tonight, we hear our principal say:
“Good Luck and Best Wishes in every way.”
Yes, for twelve long years we worked our days,
Yet still our mind craves
For more understanding and knowledge.
Some of us will go to college,
Others to service, marriage, or work,
All of these opportunities ahead of us lurk.
Yet, whatever we do or wherever we go,
WE THE CLASS OF ‘71
KNOW THAT WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN!

26 years in the Navy, 16 years teaching HS engineering and robotics, retired in Fl. I moved away for my senior year, but always felt connected to The class of 1971. I am saddened to see my best friend growing up, Paco Colobro, has passed, but I see many names that sound very familiar. I wish health and prosperity for all of you.

Has anyone seen Carolyn Kearns?

Howard (Rick) Calfee and Sue Anderson Calfee - 07-06-2014
Sue and I have been married for 37 years now.  We have lived in Bluefield, VA, Radford, VA, Bentonville, AR and now Daytona Beach, FL.  We love living in our quaint little retirement community.  We are 2.3 miles from the Daytona International Speedway and about 8 miles driving distance to be driving on the South Daytona Shores Beach.  Sue is disabled and most of my day consists of taking care of her and then spending some time with friends and neighbors.  I also work part time as the night patrol for our community.  If you are ever at the beach, look us up and we can have a lunch or dinner together.

We have 2 children, Heather Ann Calfee Franklin who is a Captain in the US Army Reserve and she served in Kandahar, AFG for 10 months.  She has 3 boys, Collin (16), Jacob (9) and Alex (8).  She currently lives in Oak Ridge, TN.  Our son lives in Radford, VA and is married to his High School sweetheart.   Chris works for BB&T Bank and manages the branch in Christiansburg, VA.  He and Becki have 2 of the most beautiful little princesses ever (Grandaddy thinks so)!  Bella is (8) and Miss Addie is (3).  Her Grammie calls her our little copperhead and we aren't sure if it's because of the color of her red curly hair or if it's because Addie sometimes reminds us that quick little snake that will whirl around before you know it and get cha'.

Wow, I just stumbled on this web site and have spent the past hour reliving old memories and flipping back and forth from the yearbook to reunion pictures.  So nice to see everyone's face. My husband and I currently live in Doha, Qatar (Middle East) and have lived in too many places to mention but always having a fun adventure. I hope to make it back to Bluefield someday and time it to coincide with a reunion.  Thanks for making this website and providing such a lovely trip down memory lane! If anyone is ever in this part of the desert, feel free to stop by....
