Save The Granada Theater
Bluefield Preservation Society, Inc., a non-profit organization, is working to save the beloved Granada Theater in downtown Bluefield, WV. Recently, the Development Authority of the Greater Bluefield Area, also a non-profit organization, acquired the Granada at auction for $70,000 and thereafter BPS entered into an agreement to purchase the historic building for the same amount.
It is our plan to rehabilitate the building for cinema, stage productions, concerts, and more - improving the quality of living for our community and preserving our rich history. Our renovation plans have recently been approved by the WV Division of Culture and History as well as the US Department of the Interior for meeting the standards of historical preservation. Now, BPS needs your help!
According to our architect's estimates, the entire renovation project will top $2.1 million and we are poised to launch a capital campaign and grant-writing effort to raise the needed funds. BUT FIRST, we need to acquire the building.
Many of us from both sides of the state line have wonderful memories of downtown Bluefield in its glory days with 3 theaters. Sadly... the Colonial Theater is gone. The State Theater is gone. We have a unique and final opportunity to SAVE THE GRANADA. Will you help? Every dollar matters. A successful fundraising campaign will indicate to the grant foundations that there is broad community support for this project.
Do you have a story to share about your first show at The Granada? Your first date at The Granada? A photo? BPS is collecting your memories. Please send any and all to:
