05-11-2005 - May 2005 BHS Newsletter

May 2005 BHS Newsletter

In the interest of trying to keep everyone informed, I will try to post a newsletter a couple of times a year, depending on how much information I receive throughout the year from our classmates.

1971BHS.Com website

A little history on the creation of our web site. Last year Duane Caldwell took on the task of putting together the 2004 get-together by himself. Feeling guilty, I volunteered to help him find as many people as we could. As I started looking for people using the Internet search tools, I quickly found out that there were thousands of people across the US with the same names as those who we graduated with. There were over 350 people we graduated with and some of these people haven’t been heard from since the summer of 1971. I also discovered that after finding someone who graduated in 1971, sending a notice, there are some people who were not interested in being “found.”

After all the hard work Duane did planning the get-together, 10 people were able to attend. We had a great time getting reacquainted. We all stayed into the wee hours of the morning talking and laughing about the days a BHS. The hardest part of planning the get-together was trying to find our classmates.

Somewhere during the night we discussed how nice it would be to have a central contact point to notify every one of future reunions and get-togethers. Something similar to Classmates.com except without all the pop-up ads and membership fees. About this time I mentioned that a web site would be nice, exclusive to 1971 BHS classmates. Someone said that was a great idea and since it was my idea, when would the web site be up and running.

The www.1971bhs.com web site has been up and running since July 2004. It started out slow and continues to grow. There have been over 3100 hits in less than a year. We are constantly trying the find ALL of our classmates who graduated from BHS in 1971. Hopefully we will have everyone registered in the near future. If you have already registered, thank you and be sure to keep your contact information up to date.

If you haven’t registered, it’s easy to add or update your contact information. Go to www.1971bhs.com click on contact classmates; find your name and update/add your contact information. Because of the ability to mass email and postage savings I would prefer to have at least an email address for any future notifications. Your email address will not go any further than the 1971bhs website unlike, Classmates.com.

Because of the expense and time involved in mailing out individual requests to register, it will become necessary stop sending out these requests via U S Mail. If you are undecided now about registering on the web site you are welcome to register anytime in the future and visit as often as you like to find out any information on the up coming get-togethers and class reunions. The primary goal is to have everyone listed on the web page with his or her contact information. After registering your contact information, if you choose too, you can make your contact information private and unavailable to visitors to the web site. You don’t have to register to use the web site but you must have an email address listed to receive notification of future get-togethers, reunions and newsletters.

Pictures are the one disappointment of the web site. There is nothing wrong with your vision; there is nothing that you need to adjust. There are no “fuzzy” classmates. The most frustrating problem about the current pictures is that there were four people with four digital cameras taking pictures and the quality of those pictures are the same. Out of about 100 pictures, there was not one good (quality) picture in the bunch. Apparently the lighting was bad, affecting all the pictures. We’ll do better this year. Be sure to bring your camera and take a lot of pictures.

Contact information on the web site

Any one with an icon by their name, email, telephone, U S Mail address, etc. has agreed to make their contact information public and available to our fellow classmates. If you would like to contact any of these people, click on any available icon to communicate with that person directly.

Unlisted: An unlisted classmate is someone who we have some form of contact information, email or U S Mail. They are unlisted because their contact information has not been confirmed with the individual. I will not change someone from unlisted to found without their OK. Email as a primary contact is best for upcoming get-togethers and reunion notification.

Missing: A missing classmate is someone who we have no contact information for. If you know the whereabouts of any of these individuals, contact them and have them register or email me and let me know any information you can about their location.

Deceased: Self explanatory. These are the classmates who we know are deceased.

This is your web site. USE IT. Visit it often. You can post your own information under news and even post your own pictures.

What’s the difference between a get-together and a class reunion?

Get-together: We are planning on having a get-together every year, the 3rd weekend of July with the exception of 35th, 40th, 45th reunions. These are meant to be an informal cocktail/dinner evening with lots of time to get reacquainted with those attending. If you are planning on being in town during the 3rd week of July, this year or any year, you should make plans to attend. Last year we had a small turnout, and for the July 16th, 2005 get-together we already have almost 30 people planning on attending. This meant to be an event you can attend occasionally or every year.

Class Reunion: Since we haven’t had a major reunion since our 20th, hopefully someone will take the reins and plan something for our 35th reunion coming up in 2006. This is hopefully a little bit more of an event, possibly over the entire weekend. The number of days and events I’m sure will depend on whom and how many people are willing to participate in the 35th class reunion.

2005 Get-Together, July 16, 2005

The plans for the July 16, 2005 have not been finalized. I have had several people email me asking about the status of the get-together. I know I promised this information before now, however we are still putting those plans together. The get-together is still on for July 16th except we aren’t sure of the location.

It appears that it will start late afternoon with a happy/social hour and dinner with plenty of time after dinner to get reacquainted with those attending. There have been almost 30 people RSVP so far and if everyone brings a spouse, those attending could easily approach 50-60 people. We are looking for a restaurant in the Bluefield that can handle at least that many people.

Last year we attended a play in Wytheville and we feel that option is not possible this year due to the large turn out expected this year.

As soon as the plans are finalized we will post them on the 1971bhs.com web page and notify you via your email address.

If you planning on attending, visit www.1971bhs.com, click on Reunions on left side of page. Under upcoming reunions, click on RSVP, fill in you information and click yes or no. All RSVPS must be done via the web site. Hopefully, you will be able to attend the get-together this year.

If you are unable to attend the 2005 get-together be sure to visit the web site anyway. We will have pictures posted shortly after the get-together. I’m sure the quality of the pictures will be better this year. Hopefully, you will be able to attend future get-togethers.

If you have any information for the newsletter, feel free to pass the information along to me.
